Activities, Groups, Programmes

Part of our reading of the Gospel is the mandate to offer hospitality. We do that as a church by welcoming a wide range of groups and activities. Here are brief notes on some of the groups and events that meet or happen at St James’s. Some are directly part of our common life, others are not.

LAYING ON OF HANDS (MINISTRY OF HEALING) takes place in the side chapel during the 11am Eucharist usually on the last Sunday of each month.

TAIZE - MUSIC FROM TAIZE Third Sunday of the month at 5.00pm at Evening Prayer

JULIAN GROUP (silent/contemplative prayer). Meets fortnightly in the Rectory. 6.30-7.30pm. Enquiries to Nick Hamilton c/o the Rectory. More here.

THE VAGABONDS are a group of mainly Christian spiritual enquirers. They meet informally once a month in a pub close to St. James' to discuss a topic of interest. They take their name from William Blake's poem The Little Vagabond, a character who prefers the alehouse to the church (Blake was baptised at St James’). More, and schedule of meetings.

LESBIAN, GAY, & TRANSGENDERED GROUP extends a warm welcome to everyone interested in relationship issues (regardless of sexuality) on the second Sunday in every month at 1pm for a shared lunch, discussions and other events. More, and schedule of meetings.

AWAKENING TO GOD We are an open discussion group on a journey of exploration. Our aim is to explore the simple truth at the very heart of the mystical journey. This spiritual journey is the soul’s quest for the Divine and means stepping out into the unknown. Although we anchor this in Christianity we also draw upon the same spiritual truth found in other world faiths, in philosophy, physics, poetry and art. So why not join us - your input will be valuable. Come if you are a seeker, come to share experiences, come if you are just curious to know more. Sometimes we have to explore a little ‘outside the box’ in order to see clearly what is inside. We meet on the 1st Sunday of the month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm, usually in the Church Hall. Enquiries to The Revd Meg Johnson.

DANCED LITURGIES Danced Liturgies on 3rd Sunday of the month 1.30-3pm. Enquiries: Heather Williams c/o Reception

Counselling is offered by volunteers undergoing professional accredited training. We offer a core service of listening and emotional support, which can, by arrangement, evolve into counselling.  The Caravan's website.

I think there ought to be a club in which preachers and journalists could come together and have the sentimentalism of the one matched with the cynicism of the other. That ought to bring them pretty close to the truth.
Reinhold Niebuhr

Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heaven, to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitations of thy glory and dominion, world without end.
John Donne

An unimaginative person can neither be reverent nor kind. John Ruskin
